Cathy O'Neill, Assistant Headteacher & Director of Sixth Form
Whether you are currently at QES or at a different school, I am delighted to tell you a little bit about our Sixth Form. We are a large Sixth Form with over 350 students; every year about 70% or more of our Year 11 stay on in the Sixth Form and we welcome 50-60 students from other schools. This being the case we run a comprehensive induction programme, beginning in January with the application process, and leading up to a detailed package of 'settling in'. These activities range from Student/Tutor fashion shows, to Sixth Form Officials' presentations, from our very own 'Activities bazaar' to our Academic Review Days where parents meet with students and tutors early in the Autumn term to review their progress.
We offer many different subjects and a diverse array of extra curricular activities, whether it be Duke of Edinburgh or Sixth Form Choir, Amnesty International or Charity Team, Sporting activities or UCAS express, there is certainly plenty to keep you energised and challenged. All this combined makes us a very special Sixth Form with high expectations of students as well as an understanding that you may need extra support and guidance from time to time.
Sixth Formers at QES not only act as role models for the lower school pupils in terms of behaviour around and about, but they are key leaders of the school. If you join QES Sixth Form you will be asked to help with the day to day running of the school whether this be showing Year 6 pupils around, interviewing candidates for a job, leading assemblies or running an extra-curricular activity.
One of the most distinguishing features of our Sixth Form is its focus on the School Values and our definition of a QES Learner. In fact, these two key aspects are the foundations of the Sixth Form Contract as seen on this website. It is worth taking time to read this, along with the prospectus, to make sure that you have a good understanding of the community you will be joining. We take this contract very seriously and we believe that through this focus, we help individuals not only gain the academic results they want to achieve, but, importantly, also develop to be fully rounded, critically minded and compassionate young adults, ready to move on in the world.
I look forward to meeting you and if there is anything you would like to ask myself or another member of the Sixth Form Team, don't hesitate to contact us.
Good luck with your GCSEs!
